bed-bugs  Bed Bugs – infestations have risen across Norfolk

We are Bedbug removal specialists throughout Norwich & Norfolk. No one has more experience in Norfolk with bed bugs than Norfolk & Norwich Pest Control. Owner of the business, Richard Pummell, specialises in bed bugs and has spent much of his time studying the behaviour and control of bedbugs and treating hotels and residential tower blocks in London and the south-east of England. Now we are treating properties for bedbugs across Norfolk and their numbers are on the rise.

With more people travelling further a field than ever before there’s a relatively new problem for Norfolk. Bedbugs. Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) are still uncommon in Norfolk.  Bedbugs are keen hitchhikers. If you unknowingly sleep in an infested hotel room, they may climb into your luggage or into your clothes. When you get home, they disembark and set up home in the darkest corners coming out in the night to suck blood from you, their new host.  With more and more of us travelling abroad and to major cities in the UK, more and more of us are likely to bring them back home. Even aircraft and public transport can have resident bedbugs.

Norfolk & Norwich Pest Control will provide you with the correct advice you’ll need if you suspect you have bedbugs. We can tell you what signs to look for and tell you exactly what to do next. Our experience and service also extends to London where we work on behalf of property management companies to treat high-rise blocks and hotels around east London – which is unique for a pest control company based in Norfolk! This is why no one has more experience in Norfolk with bedbug removal than Norfolk & Norwich Pest Control. This means we are true experts in our field.

Close, meticulous inspection should be carried out by an experienced pest technician. Norfolk & Norwich Pest Control can help with all your concerns about bedbugs.

Helpful hints: About 10% of people bitten by bedbugs will have no visible reaction to their bites. Don’t use an aerosol-based insecticide. You’ll kill some, but the fit ones will simply flee to another room. Don’t move into another bedroom.  The bedbugs want food and warmth: if you go, they’ll follow you at some speed at night. Don’t throw the beds or linen out. Most insecticides you can buy will not kill bed bugs. Some GP’s will not recognise bedbug bites and confuse them with food or chemical allergies. This is because relatively speaking bed bugs are still quite rare in Norfolk. Occasionally when bedbugs are suspected there is another culprit – house or dust mites – and the reaction on the skin is similar to bedbugs. Get a professional in.

About Bedbugs: Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown, flattened, oval, and wingless. They look like a small brown apple pip. Bedbugs have microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance. Adults grow to 4 – 5 mm in length and 1.5 – 3 mm wide. Newly hatched nymphs are translucent, lighter in colour and become browner as they moult and reach maturity (instars).

  • Bedbugs use pheromones to communicate regarding nesting locations, attacks, and reproduction. The life span of bedbugs varies by species and is also dependent on feeding. Bedbugs are attracted to their hosts primarily by carbon dioxide, secondarily by warmth, and also by certain chemicals.
  • Bedbugs are bloodsucking insects. A bedbug pierces the skin of its host with two hollow feeding tubes. With one tube it injects its saliva, which contains anaesthetics, while with the other it withdraws the blood of its host. After feeding for about five minutes, the bed bug returns to its hiding place. Although bedbugs can live for a year without feeding, they normally try to feed every five to ten days. In cold weather, bedbugs can live for about a year; at temperatures more conducive to activity and feeding, about five months.
  • You may find blood spotting on or near your bed.
