About Black Ants (Lasius niger): Black ants (also known as garden ants) are very social insects and are actually related to wasps and bees. They can be identified by their behaviour; black ants form colonies that can range in size from a few dozen to millions, over-spilling from the patio to indoors, where ‘scouts’ search for a fresh source of food. Garden ants are organised in these colonies with workers and soldiers who all work together to form a very successful entity working for the queen and to support the colony. Ants have colonised almost every landmass in the world and can adapt very quickly to varying climates. They have the ability to quickly tap into resources and to defend themselves against predators – including you and your kettle filled with boiling water!
Their ability to exploit resources brings ants into conflict with humans, as they can invade buildings such as hospitals where they can, as protein feeders, consume blood and blood related products. Not that all garden ants enjoy protein. Some prefer sweet substances such as sugars and jams which is why you’ll sometimes see them on the kitchen worktops or across the floor. To help prevent ‘scouts’ finding a source of food at home, always clear the floor of biscuit crumbs, remnants of pies and other food spillages. It’s no surprise care and nursing and care homes are most affected by garden ants.
