Today, there are cold fogging machines that clear roof voids of flies without the need for smoke bombs to be lit with the risk of fire. In our experience smoke bombs do not perform very well, which is why we don’t recommend their use. Fogs are also used commercially in food warehouses and many other places in Norfolk. If used correctly, a fogging fluid will immediately kill flies and leave a long-term residue in place to ensure new flies are killed usually before you are even aware of them being there. About Cluster Flies. Cluster Flies are often seen during October right through the winter period up to March, depending on the weather. Often these flies are seen on window sills and within roof spaces – sometimes in their thousands!
DESCRIPTION The Cluster Fly is slightly larger than the common housefly. There are no distinct lines or stripes behind the head, and the abdomen has irregular light and dark grey areas. Size: 7 mm.
HABITAT Adult flies of the last generation of the year become numerous during the latter days of September to mid October. As cold weather progresses, adults seek protected places to spend the winter. In many cases, this is within walls, attics, storage rooms, and basements of houses. Insect Screens offer no protection since these flies prefer to crawl in through small openings elsewhere around the building. For this reason they are extremely difficult to keep out of houses. Isolated houses in the country are especially prone to invasion, since they offer the only warm shelter for miles around.
LIFE CYCLE The female lays eggs in the soil near the burrows of earthworms. The tiny maggots that hatch from the eggs seek out earthworms to feed upon. The maggots of cluster flies have never been reared on any other food but living earthworms. When full grown, the parasitic maggot leaves the body of the host and enters the soil. There are about four generations a year. Cluster Flies are usually associated with areas that have a healthy earthworm population, such as extensive lawned or grassed areas.
TYPES OF DAMAGE Cluster Flies are greasy when squashed and can stain carpets and furnishings.
CONTROL We are able to offer effective removal of Cluster Flies around interior areas where they are over- wintering. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CLUSTER FLIES
- Cluster Flies appear during late autumn, winter, and early spring and form clusters – sometimes in their thousands. They are not often seen as they huddle together for warmth often within the folds of roof felt. They will pass through to rooms below and can be seen on window ledges, appearing motionless.
When crushed, they leave a greasy spot on upholstery and carpets. They often feint death. Cluster Flies are also active at night and are triggered by light.
