Why do I need to have mice treated?

House Mice (their proper name is actually Mus musculus) are extremely clever and adapt themselves quite quickly to their surroundings in the comfort of your warm home. They will quite happily live from small discarded food debris they find such as under the toaster or on the floor. In the loft space they will find flies, spiders and plant material that has been blown through the roof tiles during the summer.

Of most concern is that house mice, like many wild creatures, carry salmonella  bacteria in their gut and when they expel their droppings, inevitably they’ll walk across them and transfer the bacteria to where ever the mouse travels. This will include you kitchen draining board. If your cups are stored upside down to drain, you will have the risk of direct contact with salmonella with your mouth. Mice will also crawl over plates, pots and pans – especially if you leave last nights curry out for breakfast!

For good measure, mice will often pass urine when expelling their droppings too. Therefore, mouse control is essential for modern day living.

About the House Mouse

House Mice are found in houses (hence their name) and all areas that provide them with food and shelter.  Usually brown or grey in colour, their body length varies between 60-90mm, however their tail can add an additional 10mm to their length. Mouse droppings are black and rod-shaped and are about 3mm long.

The house mouse likes a good source of food and nest near it. They do not need to drink water as they can survive on food with a water content. Nests are can be made from wool, newspaper and cloth.

Mice are mainly active at night, feeling their way round with their whiskers and keen sense of smell.

It’s said if you can pass a pencil underneath a door, a mouse will pass through. Whilst young, they are able to dislocate their skull and hip bones to pass through these small gaps. Therefore, a trained and experienced pest controller can usually identify these areas for you.

Mice also happily chomp away at stuff around the home and hence cause damage to furniture, packets of food and clothing. Some have expensive tastes and cause thousands of pounds worth of damage by gnawing car interiors, computer networks and even money! Never store anything of value in the loft – it may end up in a thousand bits.
